What’s included in the first Apple Watch update — and what’s to come

The first Apple Watch update has hit iPhones everywhere, addressing common culprits like small bugs and wonky performance issues. However, an even larger update is allegedly on the horizon which could positively overhaul the experience of the Apple Watch for many.

The currently available update includes fixes to slow-loading third-party apps. As Fortune points out, “The fixes to third-party app usage could be the update’s most important aspect, given how many users have complained about how slow apps work on the smartwatch.”

The update also includes 14 security patches, correcting vulnerabilities that PC World explains “could enable arbitrary code execution, information disclosure, denial of service, traffic hijacking, privilege escalation and other attacks”

The new software, deemed Watch Software 1.0.1, also claims to boost the accuracy of activity and workout measurements. The update will bring improved tracking capabilities for indoor cycling and rowing workouts, as well as advancements in the “stand recognition software,” which tells the user to stand up after remaining sedentary for too long.

9to5mac reports the possibility of an update to the heart rate monitoring software to alert users of an irregular heartbeat, which likely wouldn’t be unveiled until Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference in June. Also exciting is a potential “Find my Watch” function akin to “find my iPhone.”

Next, a “Smart Leashing” concept is reportedly in the works to give users a tap if he or she is leaving the paired iPhone behind. And finally, 9to5mac says Apple plans to market the current Apple Watch as a primary input device for the next-generation Apple TV.
