Before the end of 2014, T-Mobile President and CEO John Legere posted his predictions for the upcoming year in the US wireless industry, and he thinks wearables will be some of the most important devices in 2015.
“I love what Jawbone, Fitbit, Samsung, LG, Microsoft and others are doing in the wearables space,” said Legere in a blogpost on T-Mobile’s website. “But we haven’t begun to see the potential of this category.”
Legere went on to say that, though 2015 will not be the year wearables make their “full impact,” he believes the Apple Watch will be the product that brings wearables into a mainstream market. He cited a study by Transparency Market Research that the wearable technology industry will grow from $1 to $20 billion dollars in the next few years.
Some, like Cam Bunton from T-Mobile blog TmoNews, are skeptical of Legere’s prediction that 2015 will be “the year of the wearables.” Bunton says that the Apple Watch may not appeal to the average consumer. “Smart, connected wearables have to change people’s thought process about what a watch should be,” he argues. He then goes on to say smartwatches in general need to offer more than “coolness, style and features” similar to that of a smartphone.
Legere’s article highlights other predictions for 2015, including growth of phablet sales, competition with Verizon’s LTE network, and upcoming legislation in Washington DC that will affect the wireless industry. He also made a bold statement: “T-Mobile will – officially – become the No. 3 wireless company in America in 2015.”
