Back in August SMS Audio, a premiere audio headphone and accessories brand founded by Hip Hop artist Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson with Intel Corporation announced a collaboration to develop innovative heart monitoring earphones named Biosport In-Ear Headphones. The partnership’s efforts have come to a culmination now that the earphones are available to consumers, just in time for the holiday gift season. The product launch was captured in this short video which shows NBA All-Star Carmelo Anthony’s involvement with the product:
When the partnership was announced, Michael Bell, Corporate VP and GM of the New Devices Group at Intel said, “With SMS Audio, we will bring smart headphones to market that eliminate the inconvenience of add-on devices with an integrated, one-device fitness accessory offering high-end style and premier sound quality for an exceptional fitness experience.” And it appears they’ve done just that!
These specialized headphones collect data by using a heart monitor and pedometer among their tiny built-in sensors, and special software. The headphones contain an accelerometer to count steps taken. The infra-red and visible light sensors measure heart rate while exercising or throughout a regular day. The data collected from the headphones is sent to the mobile device that it directly plugs into. The 3.5 mm gold-plated audio jack features unique technology that draws energy directly from the smart phone or digital device’s microphone jack to power the biometric technology.
To help track your heart rate, distance, elevation, pace, and calorie burn, the Biosport In-Ear Headphones will be compatible with popular fitness app, RunKeeper. RunKeeper support will enable users to plan fitness routines and track progress.
SMS Audio BioSport In-Ear Headphones can be purchased at SMS Audio for $149.95. The device will be added to the Wearables.com Database shortly!
