Oculus Brings On Movie and Motion-Capturing Expert

Oculus VR, a video game technology company specializing in virtual reality, announced that they now have three new acquisitions that will be key parts of their team. One of these three acquisitions is Chris Bregler, known for his work in motion capture space. According to an official blogpost from Oculus, he will be directing an Oculus Research vision research team.

Bregler is best known for his visual effects in Hollywood movies, including his work in The Lone Ranger (2013) and Star Trek: Into Darkness (2013). Bregler’s work in both of these movies were nominated for the 2014 Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. Other projects include The Avengers (2012), Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), Noah (2014), and more. Currently, Bregler is a professor at New York University in the Computer Science department. Before becoming an NYU professor for eleven years, he was on the faculty at Stanford University. He has worked at Hewlett Packard, Interval, Disney Feature Animation, and LucasFilm’s Industrial Light and Magic.

In addition to bringing on Bregler, Oculus has brought on two groups of innovators to further enhance their company. Nimble VR is a five-person team that has been developing machine learning and computer vision capabilities in order to enable high-quality and low-latency skeletal hand tracking. 13th Lab, a group of seven, strives to develop efficient and accurate real-time 3-D reconstruction framework.

Nimble VR, 13th Lab, and Bregler will all be integral and important parts of Oculus. They will be joining the team full-time as their existing projects wrap up.
