Moves App, the activity tracking movement diary, announced yesterday that they have been acquired by Facebook. In the post the Moves App team writes:
Since we launched Moves, we’ve been focused on running a simple and clean activity diary that millions of people like you have enjoyed using…Now, we’re joining Facebook’s talented team to work on building and improving their products and services with a shared mission of supporting simple, efficient tools for more than a billion people.
This marks Facebook’s official entry into the fitness tracking race. Though Facebook did recently purchase virtual reality hardware company Oculus VR, there are no plans of Zuckerberg and crew jumping into the fitness tracker hardware race. Given Facebook’s user count, the company’s ability to offer a fitness tracking platform from which to aggregate user fitness data is a huge competitive advantage. The Moves App will continue to operate as a standalone platform for the time being.
