Apple HomeKit devices hit stores next month

With the rollout of the Apple HomeKit, users will be able to control every lamp, lock and light with a simple Siri voice command (or with a button, if you don’t have a great relationship with Apple’s leading lady).

HomeKit, as explained by Apple, is a framework in iOS 8 for communicating with and controlling connected accessories in a user’s home and was first announced of the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference in June 2014.

However, a hard-and-fast launch date did not accompany the presentation. Since then, the media speculated non-stop on potential delays, hedging bets on when the connected home platform would be fully available. To much fanfare, Apple released a statement on Thursday saying that devices compatible with HomeKit will hit stores as soon as next month.

“HomeKit has been available for just a few months and we already have dozens of partners who have committed to bringing HomeKit accessories to market and we’re looking forward to the first ones coming next month,” Trudy Muller, a spokeswoman for Cupertino, California-based Apple, said Thursday in a statement.

The range of HomeKit compatible devices will include adaptors, environment monitoring, garage door openers, and more. Devices will pair securely and easily with Apple hardware, and it’s rumored that Apple TV may act as an operating hub for the ecosystem.

The 2015 WWDC takes place on June 8, whereupon we’re likely to receive more definitive information about the IoT kit.
