20% of US Consumers Will Own Wearables by 2015

According to a recent study by ON World, 1 out of 5 Americans will own a wearable device by next year. While the fitness tracking device market has already crossed over into the mainstream market, Americans are apparently interested in the applications of wearables outside of health and fitness. According to Mareca Hatler, ON World’s Research Director,

“Fitness continues to be the primary driver but opportunities for wearable devices are growing for personal lifestyle enhancements, safety, comfort and convenience.”

The firm surveyed over 1,000 US adults and found that the younger demographic, ages 18 to 34, were principally driving the adoption of wearables, with 30% of that group already owning a wearable or planning to buy one in the next 12 months. Fitness and health applications continue to drive interest with 60% of respondents citing benefits to wellness as their principal interest in wearables.

Males were more likely to be interested in wearables, though interest among female consumers continued to rise, as does interest among income levels outside higher income households. Smartwatches lead the way for products of most interest, followed by activity trackers, smart glasses, and heart rate monitors.
